The Mainz Centre for Digitality in the Humanities and Cultural Studies, mainzed

The Mainz Centre for Digitality in the Humanities and Cultural Studies, mainzed, is an open network for bundling digital skills in the various institutions at the science location Mainz. The focus is on the infrastructural support and practical implementation of the transformation of the humanities and cultural studies disciplines in the course of digitization. mainzed works locally and thinks globally by starting with concrete questions and seeking links to international developments in the field of digital humanities.
Motivation
mainzed (Mainz Center for Digitality in the Humanities and Cultural Studies) bundles the digital competencies of six scientific institutions at the science location Mainz in one network.
In the fall of 2013, the first informal “association DHMainz” was founded with the help of the Mainzer Wissenschaftsallianz. This association organized the “Digital Humanities Day 2014” in Mainz. Encouraged by this successful cooperation and the great potential it offers, these six institutions decided to found mainzed in November 2015.
Since then, the partners have been pursuing the goal of accompanying and supporting the change in the humanities and cultural studies in the course of digitization. mainzed has become a place of exchange for scientists of all qualification levels and with many different skills.
In addition, mainzed was significantly involved in the conception of the content of the master’s degree in digital methodology in the humanities and cultural studies. Thanks to the content-related cooperation between mainzed’s partners on the course, students have been able to take part in practical research in seminars and project work since the 2016/17 winter semester.
Various scientific disciplines - from archeology to translation studies - and competencies - from the annotation of point clouds to the graph database and user-centred design - are bundled in the network. A lively exchange between the disciplines takes place via mainzed and the many events offered, a good example of this is the annual mainzedZWEI.
Activities
Under the umbrella of mainzed, numerous new research projects have been developed and successfully implemented since its foundation. In addition, the centre regularly offers opportunities for exchange among researchers in the partner institutions and beyond with innovative networking formats.
